Name: Alim Surana
Canon: Dragon Age: Origins / Awakening
Pull-point: Beginning of Dragon Age: Inquisition (Mentioned)
Power Opt-In Post: N/A
Content Opt-Out Post N/A
Age: 32 (21 at the start of Origins.) Elves in the Dragon Age Universe age like humans.
Gender/Sex: Cis-Male
Appearance: Alim is a city elf, and pretty tall for one at 5'8". He has tan skin and long, black-brown hair that normally reaches just past his shoulder blades but it's always worn it in a braid flipped over his left shoulder. His eyes are grey-black and deeply set into his face, and he has an impressively hooked nose that may be his most distinguishing feature. (It may have been broken about half a dozen times.)
Like most elves (and especially mages) he's fairly lanky and skinny, but has a very fit build and a sinewy strength.
The right side of his face is heavily scarred, including a missing ear tip, and both his knuckles have scarring and damage. The little finger is completely missing on his left hand, and one rough, deep scar can be seen on his left forearm going straight down to the inside of his elbow.
History: Alim was born in the Denerim alienage and orphaned as an infant. Raised in the alienage orphanage, he took to the streets as a small boy, stealing to survive. One day he stole from the wrong person in the market (a human merchant) and got one ear cropped and his left little finger severed as a punishment. He was seven.
At age ten, he discovered magic and set the merchant's stand on fire. Naturally, that attracted the Templars and he was hauled off to the Circle. Further raised there, he actually really liked the Circle, for giving him safety and an education. He never had to be hungry or beaten again, and the lack of freedom didn't bother him.
During Origins, he joined the Grey Wardens after being fooled by his best friend to break the laws of the Circle, thus having to choose between the Wardens and becoming Tranquil. After the events at Ostagar, he gathered a group of misfits to help him stop the Blight that was threatening to destroy Ferelden.
He managed. Eventually. Got a pretty swanky title out of it, too - Hero of Ferelden.
Later becoming Warden-Commander of Ferelden, he then got involved with another gang of misfits to battle more darkspawn. (Some that could talk, even!) This was also (barely) managed... after some serious issues and some rather big mistakes involving turning to blood magic to protect his friends from the great darkspawn-spawning lump called the Mother.
After this he withdrew from the spotlight for years, traveling Thedas with his dog (and sometimes a certain Antivan lover). He went into hiding when people started to look for him to become Inquisitor, completely done with this hero thing - and is instead currently following leads that may allow him to prevent the effects of the Calling, and grant Wardens a longer lifespan.
Personality: With the background of a street child, a city elf and a mage, Alim has been oppressed all his life in one form or the other. It wasn't until he joined the Wardens that he truly felt free, and he still carries a torch for his fellow city elves and other 'lesser' people.
He's snarky, witty and sarcastic most of the time, but carries a bit of the grumpiness of a war veteran that's seen some serious shit. Adding to that, Alim is also rather stubborn, and thus doesn't have patience for political bullshit or nobles - and it tends to take time before he respects people in positions of power.
Alim's greatest strengths are his compassion and mercy, his willingness to aid and heal without judgement or taking sides. He has a calm, nice bedside manner, and is honest and straightforward with a burning need to help others and fulfill his duty as a Warden. He's very proud of being one, despite all the shit it's put him through.
That pride also fuels his loyalty to his friends, the people he's fought beside for many years. You don't fight many-nippled flesh beasts with just anyone, after all. Those he calls friends always have a hook-nosed healer a message away, no matter what.
Also a horrible flirt. Pansexual and in an open relationship, he takes his pleasures where he can get them and quite honetsly has mile-wide commitment issues. What point is there in sharing your life with one person if you'll just die in 10-20 years anyway?
Abilities: Alim is a mage, which means that he is attuned to the Fade, a metaphysical existing simultaneously with the physical world separated by the Veil. With this connection, he is able to draw out energy from the Fade with the help of his mana and weave it into spells.
Mages can usually cast one or two spells depending on the cost and then have to wait for their mana to recharge (which takes a few moments), so they usually back up their magic with bladed magical staves that help them fire weaker elemental energy without the mana cost.
While mages technically has the ability to use all those spells, he mainly uses Primal and Creation magic:
Flame Blast: A cone of sustained flames channeled in one direction.
Lightning: Pretty much a small bolt of lightning.
Winter's Grasp: Casts a large ice blast that turns an enemy into an ice statue and freezes them in place.
Stonefist: Summons a boulder from the Fade and smashes it into a target, sending them flying.
Spell Wisp: A small green-blue wisp of magic that helps spells have a stronger effect.
Grease: A spell that literally lubes up a larger area, making everything super slippery. Also highly flammable.
Alim is a Spirit Healer, meaning he specializes in healing and rejuvenating his companions.
Spirit Healer Game Specialization
Heal: Standard healing spell. Will not put back lost body parts.
Rejuvenation: Grants new energy and strength to the weary.
Regeneration: A sustained healing spell that heals over time.
Life Ward: Protects a target from killing blows.
Cleansing Aura: Creates a soothing aura in a circle around Alim that heals minor injuries such as scrapes and small cuts.
...of course, then there was that one time he used Blood Magic to superpower his spells. He has sworn to never do that again, but you know. Desperate measures.
(In Arda Marred, he will be tapping into the Music instead of the Fade. His spirit healing will also be less powerful due to not being able to connect with Fade spirits.)
As a Dragon Age elf, he has some limited night vision, with tapetum lucidum that make his eyes reflect light at night. Like most elves in pretty much any canon, he's also generally a bit more dexterous and agile.
As a Grey Warden, he's able to sense Darkspawn - but that's useless anywhere other than in Thedas. It also gives him added stamina, but he has a very reduced lifespan.
Inventory:
• Grey Warden Light Armor.
• Six Major Healing Potions
• One staff that shoots (minor) fire balls.
• Kaddis paint that give mabari a minor resistance to physical damage.
Animal Companion Info
Name: Duncan, but affectionately nicknamed "Barkspawn".
Appearance: One massive, elderly mastiff-like war hound called a mabari. Slightly grey around his muzzle and wearing white kaddis war paint. The upper right fang is broken in two, but sealed.
Personality: Extremely loyal and ferocious, mabari imprint on one owner and will fight to the death for them. They are highly intelligent dogs that seem to almost fully understand human speech. They're completely unafraid and the finest friend you could ever have.
Abilities: Fighting, ripping people into little pieces, finding odd treasures, and an amazing sense of smell.
